Most of us have a pretty vague idea of who we sell to (or who we want to sell to) but most of us are pretty vague about the specifics and we rarely write that information down.
Maybe you know you want to reach moms, or business people, or someone who wants to lose weight. You might know that you want to reach people living in your town, or maybe you think you are selling to anyone who will buy your products?
But if that’s all you know – don’t be surprised if you aren’t doing too much selling.
Your target market (or perfect customer) is a lot more than male or female, their age range or geographical location. WHY they do what they do (what motivated them) is just as important and without that knowledge, your marketing plans will fall flat.
Many of us start out and think that our target audience is anyone who will buy our products or services!
The truth is though, there are more than 7 billion people on the planet and it is not likely that every single one is interested in buying from you! To use your marketing time and budget as wisely as possible, it is necessary to narrow down your niche (that is the very specific part of the market you want to target) as much as possible.
Find out who they are, what they are interested in, where they are, why they are motivated to make the choices that they do, what they read, and what they watch on tv.
Figuring out exactly who is in your target market is an important step.
